WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Global climate change won’t just change the environment, warns a new study. It could radically alter human society.
A Japanese researcher compared temperature fluctuations in his country to the ratio of male to female babies.
Dr. Misao Fukuda, of M&K Health Institute in Ako, Japan told Live Science that male fetuses may be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
Since the 1970s, he pointed out, temperature fluctuations have become more common in Japan. At the same time, there has been an increase in the deaths of male fetuses, relative to the deaths of female fetuses.
In other words, fewer male children are being born compared to female children.
The study cautions that it has not discovered a direct correlation between climate change and fetal deaths.
The findings are published in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
