(PIX11) — An anonymous businessman from Hong Kong donated $1 million to the families of slain NYPD detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, the New York Daily News reported.

The details of the gift were announced during a new conference at the Detectives Endowment Association headquarters.

“In every tragedy there are individuals who step forward, step up to the plate,” said union president Michael Palladino.

Ramos’ widow held both of her sons’ hands during the announcement, according to the Daily News, while Liu’s father expressed gratitude for the donation.

“He repeatedly, every time I speak to him, reminds us that Officer Liu was his one and only son. One and only child. And so obviously he is very heartbroken,” Rep. Grace Meng (D-Queens) said.

Liu’s father will receive $100,000 each year for five years, while Ramos’ sons will split $500,000 to go to their educational fund, following the donor’s wishes.
